<image:title>Blog - Prefabricated straw panels and Accessory Dwelling Units: A match made in heaven! - Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) policy is rapidly evolving across the country. Cities, and now states, are crafting ordinances and laws that make building secondary dwellings on a property easier.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Prefabricated straw panels and Accessory Dwelling Units: A match made in heaven! - ADUs are necessarily small-ish; their total square footage is usually capped at around 800-1000 SF or so.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Prefabricated straw panels and Accessory Dwelling Units: A match made in heaven! - Because of the affordable housing crisis, communities are looking to encourage ADU construction. ADUs are a great sustainable development strategy because they add housing and density in a gentle way. No new city roads or infrastructure needs to be built to accommodate these dwellings.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Prefabricated straw panels and Accessory Dwelling Units: A match made in heaven! - And, they create very flexible housing. An ADU could house a young family, a college student, or a retiree looking to downsize. It could be an office for someone working from home or starting a business, a guesthouse for a grandparent who wants to visit more often, or it could be an income-generating rental for a homeowner.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Prefabricated straw panels and Accessory Dwelling Units: A match made in heaven! - Straw panels are a great solution for ADU construction for a few reasons. First, prefabricated panels can be installed on-site so quickly! Reducing construction time saves labor costs and reduces disruption to a household (and your neighbors). Part of what makes panel installation go so fast is the ability to use a boom truck, crane, or telehandler to access the hard-to-drive-access corners of a backyard where an ADU could live. Pairing panels with a helical pier foundation in lieu of concrete, as New Frameworks does with their Casita kits, means the question of "could we get a concrete truck in our backyard?" is no longer a concern.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Prefabricated straw panels and Accessory Dwelling Units: A match made in heaven! - Lastly, panelized straw bale construction is both contractor and DIY friendly. Straw bale construction has been a niche building method that was hard for conventional builders to adopt. Straw panels, however, can be clad with conventional siding methods (be sure to include a ventilated rainscreen) and gypsum board over an interior furring wall (which creates a chase for plumbing and electrical lines). But, for folks out there who have dreamt of building their own strawbale home but were daunted by the bureaucratic coordination and physical work entailed, straw panels may be the perfect middle ground.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Straw Bale Construction Fire Resistance: Tests, Building Codes & Wildfire Survival</image:title>
<image:caption>Why Strawbale Walls Don’t Burn Like Loose Straw Loose straw burns easily because it has both fuel and oxygen; a fire can weave through the fibers and grow quickly. In a construction-grade strawbale wall, the conditions are completely different from the isolated loose straw. Firstly, the bales are densely compressed and then coated with plaster or other protective layers, which dramatically limits the amount of oxygen available to sustain combustion. Once a wall is rendered, the outer layer becomes the first line of defense, functioning much like the protective skin on other fire-rated assemblies. Behind that skin is densely packed straw with minimal air space, so even if flame reaches the bale, it tends to char slowly at the surface instead of supporting a fast-moving fire (Teslík, 2021). Straw also contains silica, which is a natural fire retardant (Atik & Ates, 2012). This combination of low oxygen, compacted fuel, and protective render is what allows strawbale walls to achieve fire performance that surprises building officials, insurers, and first-time observers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Do Straw Bale Homes Mold? Moisture Control, Durability & Water Protection Explained</image:title>
<image:caption>It's important to understand the properties of straw and how they differ from conventional materials. Straw is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb and release moisture from the surrounding air, kind of like a natural humidity regulator (Song et al., 2024). This helps buffer indoor humidity levels, but it also means you have to manage vapor to avoid buildup. Unlike wood or concrete, straw walls are often finished with breathable plasters, either lime or earth-based, which allow moisture to escape outward. You can also use vinyl siding with a rainscreen – that's an air gap behind the siding that promotes drying and prevents trapped water.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Do Straw Bale Homes Mold? Moisture Control, Durability & Water Protection Explained</image:title>
<image:caption>Now when it comes to managing water, it all begins with the base. In order to prevent straw bales from ground moisture, dew points, and condensation, a toe up is required. A toe up is essentially 2x4s laid down on their side with a vapor barrier, which straw bales sit on top of. This completely breaks connections to the moisture in the ground and potential condensation on the bottom of straw bales by allowing each bale to be slightly raised above the ground (King, 2006).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Do Straw Bale Homes Mold? Moisture Control, Durability & Water Protection Explained - Roof Considerations</image:title>
<image:caption>Roof design also gets special attention, with many designs including a roof overhang slightly longer than traditional designs, with overhangs between 1-2 feet (Straube 2009) With all of these methods of preventing water intrusion there remains one final obstacle, water intrusion during installation/construction. In typical strawbale construction, this is especially important to pay attention to. As great as all the other methods of preventing water in the built environment are, it's important to focus on water during construction. As mentioned in previous posts, stacking bales manually is a labor intensive process that can take multiple weeks to complete before the walls could be finished and protected. There are methods used to circumvent this, such as paying attention to weather conditions before construction, safe storage of bales in climate-controlled facilities, and covering placed bales with plastic covers after each day during construction. With Prefab design, as mentioned before, this comes down to about a week-long process, with the same methods used to avoid water problems.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The History of Straw Bale Construction: From Nebraska Homesteads to Modern Prefab Panels - What is Straw Bale Construction?</image:title>
<image:caption>Strawbale construction is a sustainable building method that uses tightly packed bales of straw, the leftover stalks from grain crops like wheat, barley, rye, oats, or rice as the primary wall material. Straw bales are strong enough as a material to allow two separate building methods, load bearing and stick framed. In load bearing construction, straw bales are stacked like bricks in a running bond pattern and hold up the building assembly all on their own (Koh & Kraniotis, 2020). In typical stick framed construction, straw acts as an infill like conventional insulation such as cellulose or fiberglass, being fitted between studs. Once either stacked within or without a structural frame, the wall is then typically coated with natural plaster such as lime or clay. The result is a strong, breathable, and energy-efficient wall system made from common and locally available natural materials. In regards to energy, relevant research shows that using straw bales as a construction material could reduce energy consumption up to about 83.12%. as well as decrease embodied carbon up to 76% compared to the conventional buildings (Mehravar et al., 2021).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The History of Straw Bale Construction: From Nebraska Homesteads to Modern Prefab Panels</image:title>
<image:caption>In the 1970s, strawbale building experienced a revival. The technique made a comeback in the US with pioneers like Mats Myhrman and Judy Knox organizing workshops across the Southwest, and organizations such as the Ecological Building Network and The Last Straw journal helping share design standards and testing data (Steen et al., 1999). By the 1990s, a few U.S. states began to include strawbale within their building codes; including Arizona, California, and New Mexico. Academic research conducted in the last couple of decades has confirmed its impressive fire resistance, insulation value, hygroscopic properties and low embodied carbon footprint(D’Alessandro et al., 2017). What began as a practical, frontier-era solution evolved into a modern symbol of sustainability and craftsmanship.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The History of Straw Bale Construction: From Nebraska Homesteads to Modern Prefab Panels - What about Modern Age?</image:title>
<image:caption>Now to the modern age. in 2012 the Seed Collaborative was developed by New Frameworks which aimed to further bolster the use of strawbale construction through the use of prefabricated panels, greatly saving on construction time, and removed the main roadblock for strawbale construction. It’s funny to think about how this full circle has played out — in the early 1900s, populations moved from the rural to the urban, and in the early 2000s, many began moving back toward the rural. Today, Building Integrity and Monarch Architecture carry that same spirit forward through workshops created by the Seed Collaborative. By embracing prefabricated strawbale construction, we’ve transformed a traditional natural building method into an efficient, high-performance system. Prefab allows us to deliver beautiful, healthy, and century long homes in a fraction of the time.</image:caption>
