Wanting to "sow the seeds" of their prefab straw panel methodology around the country, Vermont-based New Frameworks (NFW) initiated a training program for builders and architects in 2024 called the "Seed Collaborative." New Frameworks has been a leader in the natural building world for nearly two decades. They have used a variety of natural building techniques over the years, but have now shifted their focus completely to prefabricated straw panels.
While some prefab straw panel producers around the world have invested in high-tech automated production, NFW has kept their fabrication methods intentionally accessible to everyday carpenters.
Because cereal grains are grown in many parts of North America, straw is widely available. There is huge potential for straw panel production in many locations. The Seed Collaborative creates a mechanism for sharing panel production knowledge and other resources to enable new fabricators to be successful. The Collaborative's growth enables prefabricated straw panels to be more widely available and simultaneously reduce emissions from long-distance shipping.
2025 marks the second year of the Seed Collaborative. The second cohort includes four new participating organizations around the USA, bringing the total participants to seven. For more information on the Seed Collaborative, how to participate, or how to source panels, reach out to Building Integrity or any of the participants listed below.
Along with Rare Forms of Easthampton, MA, Building Integrity was in the first Seed Collaborative cohort which began in 2024.
Through a combination of online and hands-on training, Building Integrity can now design and produce straw bale panels according to NFW's system.
Our ongoing relationship with NFW and the Seed Collaborative enables us to share ideas to evolve panel design and production so it can be more efficient and scalable.
New Frameworks has a line of pre-designed straw bale panel "Casitas" which Building Integrity is equipped to construct and install. These small homes are perfect for backyard Accessory Dwelling Units or guest cabins.

Seed Collaborators meet regularly on Zoom for training and idea sharing to support our respective businesses. In working together, we are building capacity to shift the AEC industry more broadly toward healthier, more efficient, regionally-produced, carbon-sequestering bio-based materials!
